Behind Convent Walls

Borowczyk brings his erotic art-house eye to the convent. Beautiful, explicit and barely plotted.

Walerian Borowczyk, the Polish master of erotic art cinema, applies his painterly eye to a Renaissance convent full of sexually frustrated nuns, drawing loosely on Stendhal. It is more concerned with composition and atmosphere than plot, a series of beautifully shot erotic vignettes behind the cloister walls.

It sits at the art-house end of nunsploitation, closer to Borowczyk's Immoral Tales than to the Italian sleaze cycle, and its craft is undeniable even when its narrative is not. For viewers interested in the subgenre's more aesthetically serious wing, it is essential.

1978 · Mexico · 77m

The most hysterical nunsploitation film ever made. A convent, two possessed girls, and constant screaming.
