Death Walks on High Heels

Ercoli's best. Structurally cleverer than most of the cycle.

Luciano Ercoli's giallo is cleverer about structure than most of the cycle. A Parisian showgirl whose jewel-thief father is murdered flees to England, and the film pulls off a mid-point shift that reorders what you thought you were watching.

It is stylish, twisty and a little colder than the Martino films, with Nieves Navarro (billed as Susan Scott) carrying it. The plotting actually holds together on a second viewing, which in this genre is close to a miracle.

For anyone who wants a giallo where the mystery is the point.

Spanish, incoherent, and gleefully stupid. 'Bastard! Bastard!'
