Hideo Gosha's widescreen epic about a ronin haunted by a clan's slaughter of a village to cover up the theft of the shogunate's gold, who returns to prevent it happening again. It is one of the most visually spectacular chanbara films, staged in genuine deep snow along the Japan Sea coast.
Tatsuya Nakadai anchors it, and Gosha balances the moral weight with real spectacle. It is the point where the serious samurai film and the action film meet without either losing anything.
