Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx

The best of the series. A pram, a snowfield, and a small army that should have stayed home.

The second and finest Lone Wolf and Cub film, released the same year as the first. Ogami Itto is hunted across Japan by a clan of female ninja and the three Masters of Death, and the set pieces escalate toward a snowbound massacre that is one of the great action sequences of 70s cinema.

Kenji Misumi directs with a painter's eye and a butcher's enthusiasm. The blood is unreal, geysering black in the print, and the toddler in the pram remains improbably unbothered. This is where the series peaks.
