Revolver

Di Leo's saddest film. A prison warden's wife is kidnapped and the ransom is the release of a particular inmate, forcing the warden and the prisoner into an uneasy partnership as the scheme unravels above both their heads. Oliver Reed and Fabio Testi play the mismatched pair.

It is more melancholy than most poliziotteschi, an ordinary man ground down by forces he cannot see, and Ennio Morricone's theme (later reused in Inglourious Basterds) aches over it. The ending offers no relief.

Di Leo's most despairing film, and one of his finest.
