The Lickerish Quartet

Radley Metzger made erotica for people who read subtitles, and this is his cleverest. A bored aristocratic couple and their grown son watch a grainy stag reel at their Italian castle, then meet a woman who seems to be its star, or her double, and the film sets about folding fiction and reality into one another with real formal nerve. It looks like a European art film of the period because Metzger could actually shoot at that level, all antique rooms and prowling camera.

The sex is the selling point and the least interesting thing in it. Nobody else in American sexploitation was building objects this deliberate.
