Truck Turner

Isaac Hayes in front of the camera for once, and Nichelle Nichols swearing.

Isaac Hayes steps in front of the camera for once, as a bounty hunter whose latest target sets off a war with a stable of pimps led by a scenery-devouring Nichelle Nichols. It is fast, funny and unusually well shot by Jonathan Kaplan.

Hayes is a surprisingly relaxed lead, and Nichols, cast wildly against her Star Trek image, swears and schemes with obvious glee. The car chases and shootouts are staged with real competence.

An underrated entry, and a chance to see Hayes carry a film in every sense.
