What Have You Done to Solange?

Unusually sad for a giallo, and much better for it.

Unusually sad for a giallo. Girls at a London Catholic school are being murdered in a way pointedly linked to the crime being punished, and the film builds to a revelation that lands as tragedy rather than twist. Ennio Morricone's score does a lot of the mourning.

Massimo Dallamano, who shot Leone's first two westerns, gives it real visual weight, and the film takes its victims seriously in a way the cycle usually did not. The subject is grim and handled with more care than the packaging suggests.

One of the giallo's few mournful films.
