Alice, Sweet Alice
American giallo in Catholic New Jersey. Genuinely disturbing and well acted.
An American giallo in Catholic New Jersey, and disturbing. After a child is murdered at her first communion, suspicion falls on her strange older sister, and the film plays as a nasty mystery soaked in Catholic guilt and translucent yellow raincoats. It features a young Brooke Shields in an early role.
It is more artful and more upsetting than the standard slasher, closer in spirit to the Italian gialli it borrows from, with a real sense of religious dread. The masked child killer is a unsettling image.
An overlooked, atmospheric American horror film with a mean streak.

Human Lanterns
A Shaw wuxia that turns into a slasher, with lanterns made of human skin.
Boardinghouse
The first shot-on-video horror feature, blown up to 35mm and just as ugly as that sounds.
Rituals
The Canadian Deliverance, and grimmer than the nickname promises.
Death Walks at Midnight
Ercoli's brighter, faster Death Walks. Nieves Navarro sees a murder and nobody buys it.
The Perfume of the Lady in Black
Barely a murder mystery. A slow psychological collapse, and superb.
Death Walks on High Heels
Ercoli's best. Structurally cleverer than most of the cycle.
