A pregnant widow, four days from her due date, alone in her house on Christmas Eve, and a calm woman at the door who wants the baby and will open her to get it. Bustillo and Maury make their debut and never let the pressure off, staging the whole film as one escalating night of siege lit by a computer screen and painted in arterial red. Beatrice Dalle plays the intruder as pure patient appetite, and the practical gore is copious enough that the effects crew earned hazard pay. It is the most single-minded film the French wave produced, and it does not care whether you make it to the credits.
