Shock Waves

Underwater Nazi zombies rise off a tropical island. Peter Cushing, John Carradine, and real dread.

A cut above the usual, and one of the eeriest zombie films of its decade. Tourists stranded on a remote island discover a former SS commander (Peter Cushing) hiding a squad of undead soldiers engineered to fight underwater, who rise silently from the sea in goggles. The image of the goggled dead surfacing is unnerving.

Made cheaply in Florida, it relies on atmosphere over gore, and the daylight underwater horror sets it apart from the Italian cycle. John Carradine co-stars. Quietly effective and unlike its rivals.
