They Call Her... Cleopatra Wong

The girls-with-guns spy picture Tarantino keeps name-checking, and rightly.

Bobby A. Suarez built a whole regional action industry out of nothing, and Cleopatra Wong is his calling card. Marrie Lee plays a Singaporean Interpol agent who breaks counterfeiting rings with a shotgun, a crossbow and a very 1978 wardrobe, and the centrepiece is a raid on a monastery full of machine-gun-toting fake monks staged with far more ambition than money. Lee had no martial-arts training and learned the moves on set, which somehow makes the fights land harder rather than softer. Tarantino has cited it repeatedly as a Kill Bill touchstone, and once you watch the yellow-clad woman cut through ranks of henchmen you stop needing him to explain why. Regional pulp with real snap.
