Kinji Fukasaku, who lived through the war as a teenager and directed the great Battles Without Honour yakuza cycle, made it at seventy and meant every frame of its fury at a younger generation. It triggered a moral panic in the Japanese parliament and was kept out of official US release for over a decade, which only made every bootleg-passing teenager want it more.
