Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
The coldest panel of Park's revenge trilogy, with no jokes and no mercy in it.
A deaf-mute factory worker needs money for his sister's kidney transplant, gets fleeced by black-market organ dealers, and settles on a kidnapping that goes wrong in the quietest, most catastrophic way possible. This is the first of Park Chan-wook's vengeance films and comfortably the bleakest, a near-silent chain of ordinary people doing terrible things to each other for reasons that all make sense at the time. Song Kang-ho brings the weight as a father with his own account to settle. It flopped on release, got reappraised the moment Oldboy landed, and completes the trilogy for anyone who wants the whole grim shape of it.
