The Holy Mountain

Alejandro Jodorowsky's follow-up to El Topo, financed partly by John Lennon, is a sprawling alchemical satire in which a Christ-like thief and a group of powerful initiates climb a mountain seeking immortality. Every frame is a densely symbolic, often blasphemous tableau, and it attacks capitalism, religion and war with equal relish.

It is one of the most visually excessive films ever made, and its final shot breaks the fourth wall in a way nobody forgets. Overwhelming, pretentious and unlike anything else. A midnight-movie landmark.
