The film where Russ Meyer stopped making sunny nudie-cuties and started making something meaner. A frustrated young wife in the backwater is assaulted by an escaped convict and the day curdles toward Old Testament punishment, complete with a ranting preacher who bookends the whole thing. It is Meyer's first film with an actual plot and an actual mean streak, shot in stark black and white and steeped in guilt and retribution. Lorna Maitland was hired for reasons visible in every frame, and the film is grimmer and more punishing than the reputation of its director suggests. The missing link between the pin-up films and the delirium of Faster, Pussycat.
