Dirty Mary Crazy Larry

Ninety minutes of driving and one of cinema's great abrupt endings.

Ninety minutes of driving and one of cinema's great abrupt endings. A would-be racer, his mechanic and a girl who invites herself along rob a supermarket and try to outrun the law across rural California, and the film is essentially one long chase, powered by Peter Fonda and Susan George's chemistry.

It is a quintessential drive-in car picture, loose and fast, and it was a big influence on Tarantino, who has cited it often. The famous final shot recontextualises the whole breezy ride in a few seconds.

A pure road-and-engine film with a sting in its tail.
