Drunken Master

Jackie Chan finds the formula: comedy, pain, and visible competence.

Jackie Chan finds the formula that would make him the biggest star in the world. A young troublemaker is put through brutal training by a legendary drunken master and learns the drunken-boxing style in time to face a killer. It fuses genuine martial-arts skill with physical comedy in a way nobody had quite nailed before.

Chan's willingness to take real punishment for a laugh is already fully present, and the training sequences are both funny and jaw-dropping. It reinvented the kung fu film as comedy without cheapening the fighting.

The blueprint for Chan's entire career, and still one of his best.
