Basket Case

$35,000, shot on 42nd Street, and completely charming. The best kind of cheap.

Made for around $35,000 on the grime of early-80s 42nd Street, and all the better for it. A young man carries his surgically separated, deformed twin around in a wicker basket, and the two take revenge on the doctors who split them. The creature is stop-motion and hand-puppet and completely charming.

Frank Henenlotter shoots the Times Square of the moment it was about to disappear, which makes the film a document as much as a horror comedy. The tenderness between the brothers is real under the splatter.

Cheap, deranged and lovable.

The Indonesian one everybody means: a flying witch's head, viscera trailing, hunting in the dark.
