Dead & Buried

Stan Winston effects and a good twist. Underseen.

A quietly excellent horror film that deserves more than its cult status. Strangers who pass through a small New England fishing town keep dying and then turning up alive, working ordinary jobs, and the local sheriff slowly uncovers what the town is doing. Stan Winston's effects are superb and the twist lands.

Written by Dan O'Bannon, it trades gore for a creeping wrongness, and the seaside setting gives it a foggy, uneasy atmosphere. It is closer to a mystery than a slasher.

Underseen, well made, and with an ending worth waiting for.
