The only film Sandy Harbutt ever made, and Australia's foundational outlaw-biker picture. After a club member witnesses a political assassination, someone starts picking the riders off, so a cop goes undercover in the Gravediggers to find out who. Harbutt cast and consulted real bikies, and it shows in the funeral run, a highway procession of hundreds of bikes that no budget could have bought. It became a cult object at home, screened and re-screened for decades while its maker never directed again. The leather, the chrome and the sunbaked-road fatalism fed straight into Mad Max a few years later. Rough around every edge and held together by pure mood.
