Hammer's best occult film, and one of the few where Christopher Lee plays the hero. A duc battles a satanic cult for the souls of his friends, Richard Matheson adapts Dennis Wheatley with unusual seriousness, and the set pieces, the summoning circle, the Angel of Death, still land.
Lee reportedly considered it among his finest work, and his conviction holds the more dated effects together. It treats black magic as a genuine threat rather than a costume, which is why it works.
