To the Devil a Daughter

Hammer's last gasp. Christopher Lee said it finished the studio off.

Hammer's last gasp, and Christopher Lee said it finished the studio off. A satanic cult led by an excommunicated priest grooms a young nun (a very young Nastassja Kinski) as a vessel for a demon, and an occult novelist tries to stop them. It is glossier and nastier than classic Hammer, and troubled in its making.

Lee is excellent as the villain, and there are uneasy moments, but the film was rushed and the ending is a notorious mess. It reaches for the modern occult market and mostly misses.

A sad end for Hammer, with a great Lee performance stranded inside it.
