The Exorcist remade in Istanbul, shot-for-shot, using the same William Friedkin blocking and even a near-identical score, with the Catholic framework swapped for Islam. A young girl is possessed, doctors fail, and a man of faith is called, and the astonishing thing is how faithfully Turkish cinema reproduced a film it had no rights to.
It is a fascinating study in cultural translation, the same story rebuilt for a different religious context on a fraction of the budget. The nerve of the enterprise is the main attraction.
Essential viewing for anyone interested in how Yeşilçam remade the world.
