Shaw Brothers takes on the WIP film. As strange a combination as it sounds.
Shaw Brothers takes on the women-in-prison film, relocating the formula to a Japanese POW camp in WWII China, and the result is as strange a genre collision as it sounds. Western and Asian women suffer under sadistic captors before the inevitable escape, with the studio's usual production polish applied to distinctly un-Shaw material.
It is a curiosity above all, the biggest studio in Hong Kong trying its hand at grindhouse product, and the mix of prestige gloss and exploitation content never quite settles. It has a real cult following regardless.
An oddity worth seeing for the sheer incongruity of it.
