The Queen of Black Magic

Suzzanna, Indonesia's horror queen, wronged by a whole village and collecting on the debt.

Suzzanna is the reason Indonesian horror has a face, and this is one of her defining vehicles. A village turns on a woman as a witch, does its worst, and finds out too late that the accusation has come true and turned back on them. Liliek Sudjio plays the sorcery straight: levitations, melting faces, heads leaving bodies, every scrap of folk-magic spectacle the domestic audience turned up for.

Joko Anwar and Kimo Stamboel remade it to real acclaim in 2019, which is as good a reason as any to go and see where it came from.

The Indonesian one everybody means: a flying witch's head, viscera trailing, hunting in the dark.
