Seeding of a Ghost
Ninety minutes of restrained Shaw revenge, then twenty of rotting-corpse insanity.
A Shaw Brothers black-magic revenge picture that plays it almost straight until it very much does not. A cab driver whose wife is raped and killed hires a wandering sorcerer to get even, and for a while it behaves like a moody supernatural drama. Then the last reel arrives and the film detonates into some of the most deranged gore the studio ever printed: liquefying corpses, maggots by the fistful, and a monstrous birth that has to be seen. The build is patient and the payoff is completely unhinged, and the last twenty minutes are the reason anyone remembers it.
